Guidelines for Mentees in the NPN Mentor Program
Objectives
- Clarify Your Goals: Before starting the mentorship, take some time to understand what you want to achieve. Whether it’s improving technical skills, building a portfolio, or simply gaining more confidence, knowing your objectives will help your mentor guide you effectively.
- Be Open to Learning: The mentorship is a two-way street. While mentors are volunteering their time and expertise, your openness to learn and improve is key to a successful relationship.
- Communication is Key: Don’t hesitate to ask questions, seek clarifications, and share your thoughts. The more you communicate, the more you’ll benefit from the program.
Responsibilities
- Initial Image Review: Prepare a selection of your work for an initial review by your mentor. This will give both of you a better understanding of where you’re at in your photography journey.
- Check-ins and Updates: Regularly communicate with your mentor. Provide updates on your progress, challenges you’re facing, and any changes in your objectives or focus.
- Utilize Resources: Make the most of articles, tutorials, and courses that your mentor recommends. These resources are suggested to help you meet your goals.
- Act on Feedback: Take the time to absorb and implement the feedback you receive. This is crucial for your growth and improvement.
- Be Respectful of Time: Mentors are volunteers generously offering their expertise. Be mindful of their time commitments when scheduling discussions or requesting feedback.
Tips for a Productive Mentorship:
- Be Proactive: Don’t wait for your mentor to reach out. Take the initiative to schedule meetings, ask questions, and seek advice.
- Be Honest: If something’s not working for you, or you’d like to focus on a different aspect of photography, it’s okay to communicate that. Transparency will make the mentorship more effective for both parties.
- Stay Engaged: Between check-ins, continue to work on your skills, try out new techniques, and share updates with your mentor.
- Show Appreciation: A simple thank you can go a long way. Always express gratitude for the time and expertise being volunteered.
- Give Back: After your mentorship, consider writing a testimonial or sharing your progress with the community. Your experience can help future mentees understand the value of the program.
By adhering to these guidelines, you’re not only setting yourself up for success but also respecting the volunteer effort that mentors are putting into the program. Enjoy your mentorship journey at the Nature Photographers Network!
